"I
just finished reading Don Higgins' book on hunting
trophy whitetails and compliment him on his direct,
no-nonsense approach to this subject. Even
though I've been bowhunting for whitetails for over
thirty years now I picked up a number of good ideas
from Don's writing and can't wait to try and
implement them this fall."
Joe Blake - Bowhunter Magazine, Staff Contributor;
Bow & Arrow Hunting, Stickbows Editor

"Don's book is a straight forward, no nonsense
approach to hunting Whitetails in a world that we
all live in. The information is valuable for
seasoned and begining deer hunters interested in
increasing their odds of success. I have never
read a book more to the point and up front as this
one. It's amazing how Don was able to bring
things to the table that most of us overlook in
"their world" time and time again."Mali
Vujanic - Tecomate Wildlife Systems; Millington, MD

“Finally, there is a book that the average hunter
can relate to. Don has hit the mark with the
book. I would recommend this book to any deer
hunter.”

“I read the entire book last night. I imagine I will
read it again many times. I've read
practically every whitetail book that has been
written. Your book has some great ideas in it,
and best of all, they apply to the types of habitat
that I hunt. To be honest, I began to feel that
consistent success on mature bucks was probably not
a doable thing for people who are forced to hunt
very small tracts of land until I began to learn of
your success. Reading the book gave me some new
ideas. I find your success on trophy deer to
be inspiring. Your ideas can apply to the properties
that I hunt.”
Jon Simoneau - Kankakee,
IL
|
|
“The only other books that come close are the two
that Gene Wensel wrote. There's so much marketing
influence in Deer hunting today and people will buy
and believe anything they read about. There were
some very thought provoking ideas in your book that
I will try to implement starting today.”
Mike Maust - Troutville, VA

|
“Don, I really enjoyed your book. This is a book
that serious mature buck hunters must read. …..
Hunting Trophy Whitetails in the Real World is
the best deer hunting book I have ever read.”
Sam Castleman - Paducah, KY

“Don, Thanks again for such a fine book. Like I said
once I started reading it I couldn't put it
down.Your realistic and down to earth approach in
describing real life hunting is amazing and very
interesting to say the least. Seldom found in
magazines or other books. …… You have a very
agreeable way of getting the point across.… ….
thanks again and keep up the great ethics and
honesty. You are an inspiration to many hunters and
a credit to hunting. I'll certainly tell my friends
about your book. Thanks again”
Jim Humbert - Aurora, IL

“Don: Wanted to let you know that I finished reading
your book - Excellent book! Wish I had had a
book of this calibre 25 years ago. Well
written, easy to understand and full of great
advice. Thanks for writing it. I'll be
ordering another soon for our son-in-law's birthday
present. He'll love it.”

"...the
Don Higgins that I have
come to know is
thorough, persistent,
meticulous and blunt
ineverything he does,
this book holds true to
that approach. For the
deer hunter considering
purchasing Don’s book;
I’ll virtually guarantee
the only way you will
not learn something from
this book that will help
you harvest your next
mature whitetail, is if
your hunting buddy
steals it before you get
to read it! …. To really
appreciate his success,
you would have had to
walk in his boots. When
we were kids, we had no
deer in our area. On top
of that, the cover in
Don’s area is not
sparse, it’s scarce! Don
and the Illinois deer
herd grew up together;
as the deer herd
blossomed so did Don’s
love for such a great
and majestic animal, the
mature whitetail buck.
Along the way Don
learned, experimented
and was always
persistent in his
pursuit. …… One
year not so long ago, I
drove by Don’s place on
the last day of the
archery season. The
wind-chill was below
zero, the ground was
blanketed with snow and
as I looked across a
half mile of chiseled
plowed corn field, I saw
Don standing ready in a
tree stand in a big old
tree setting off a
wooded point. I was
afraid to slow my truck
because I thought surely
he had deer in on him
that I couldn’t see. At
a safe distance I
stopped and grabbed my
bino’s; I couldn’t see
anything under his
tree... Focusing
in on the hunter, he was
still standing, bow in
hand and staring into
the thicket ahead of him
with 3 hours to wait
until dark. Later
that evening I called
him, he hadn’t seen a
thing but said “I wanted
to be ready. It was the
last day of the season
you know, and that tree
doesn’t have a lot of
cover.” That is how
intense this guy goes
about his bowhunting!"
Todd Hewing - friend and
fellow bowhunter

“After
reading numerous other
writings by Don Higgins
I am not surprised at
the quality of this
publication. Every
trophy whitetail hunter
looking to hone their
skills should read this
book. …. No nonsense, No
bull, just facts …. 4
stars”
Henry Hortenstine - Gays, IL

"I
just finished your book
, and I would like to
say that I have never
read a more down to
earth, honest ,and
outspoken piece of
knowledge on deer
hunting in my life. The
way you layed it out and
shared it was awesome
!!! ….. Anyway Don, I
salute you for doing
such a good job on your
book and the openness
and honesty that you
share should benefit any
hunter that reads it
should he or she take it
to heart !!!!!!!!!!"
Paul Wright - Findlay, IL

“I just want you to know
that I have gotten a lot
out of the book. Things
that I have "looked at
but not seen" if you
know what I mean. It
truly is one of the best
no nonsense books I have
ever read.”
Gary McDonal - Springfield, IL

“Don, I finished your
book over the weekend. I
have never read ANY book
in that short of time, I
just couldn't put it
down. ……. Once
again thanks for such a
quality read and look
forward to any more of
your work in the
future.”
Kevin Klingenberg - Nashville, IL

"Hi Don, I
finished your book
yesterday. WOW! What a
good read. I've yet to
find a book on whitetail
hunting so captivating.
You had my son Nathan
and I as if we were in
the tree stand with you.
As novice hunters I'm
sure we will carry your
advice and tips to the
timber this fall"
Rick Finley - Herrick, IL

|
"Don, I finished your
book this morning - it
was AWESOME!!!
Very eye opening!!!
Thank you! With every
sentence I was
remembering experiences
past and planning how to
use your ideas in the
(immediate) future.
I was engrossed from the
first page. Many times I
found myself saying
things like, "Yes, he
gets it!" or "Why
haven't I thought of
that?" … I truly hope
that some day our
schedules could allow me
to meet you face to
face. … Your success in
life so far is very
inspiring. … You Rock,
Your Book Rocks - Thanks
a bunch!

“Don Higgins lets the
cat out of the bag when
it comes to pursuing
mature whitetails.
Simple, straightforward
comments such "most
hunters hunt sign
instead of deer" should
give many a reader an
"aha" moment. Don takes
on the establishment
head-on and bucks the
trend of dishing out
what we want to hear,
and instead tells us
what we need to hear. I
only wish Don would have
written this buck
earlier in my career.”

D"on: I just finished
reading your book for
the second time and
wanted to tell you that
it's fabulous. I
really appreciated the
no-nonsense approach and
your ability to tell it
quickly and directly to
the point. I have
no doubt that the
tactics and ideas will
work if I can just get
enough time to hunt!
"
Richard D. - Bloomfield

“I haven't devoured a
deer hunting book like
that since Roger
Rothaar's Whitetail
Magic! I cant tell you
how many times I was
reading that book
nodding my head agreeing
with almost everything
you said. I have often
toyed with the idea of
writing a book because
much of what I read and
what I observe in my
woods never really seem
to be the same. I don’t
have to write one now
because you have about
said it all. You said it
best "real world deer
hunting" AMEN! I
could go on and on but
just wanted to say
thanks for taking the
time to bring out a
great book.”
John Deitterick - Queen Anne, MD

"I must say ... I was
speechless only halfway
into the book. But now
that I've finished
the book it's as if you
put together the last
pieces of my own puzzle.
I cannot thank you
enough for writing such
a book. It read nicely,
flowed well, and really
will help my own
learning curve. …. A
great book.. the best
I've ever read on the
subject of hunting deer.
I have recommended it to
everyone on the
HuntingNet.Com forums. I
hope you write more in
the future.”

"I read the book in two
days and have started
re-reading it. There is
a lot of great info. in
this book. It is the
best book I have read on
whitetail deer to date.
I am also a straight
forward and to the point
guy. I enjoyed that part
of it. Thanks for
writing a very good
book, I enjoyed reading
it and would recommend
it to any serious
hunter. Lots of good
info. I've been hunting
for 25 years and can
appreciate many of the
techniques you describe
in the book. Reading
this book will
definitely help me
refine my hunting
practices next deer
season and make me a
more successful deer
hunter.”
Rich Buker - Clinton, IN

”Just wanted to let you
know that your book and
the many articles that I
have read have given me
a whole new passion for
bow hunting. I thought
that I tried to do
things right, but I have
now taken a whole new
approach. The book
is addictive. Keep the
great articles coming
they are what the bow
hunting world needs.”
Brandon Shoulders - Eddyville, KY

“I read an article that
you wrote in North
American Whitetail about
2 months ago. I liked it
so much that I had my
girlfriend read it.
Little did I know that
she was paying attention
and surprised me with
your new book, Hunting
Trophy Whitetails In The
Real World. Well on the
morning of Nov. 19, 2006
I shot a picture perfect
10 point that grossed
136" with a net score of
134 2/8". For around
mid-Michigan that is a
really nice deer and for
me the buck of a
lifetime. Thanks for
writing such a down to
earth book with tons of
information and sharing
your incredible
experiences.”
Brad Spitzley - Sunfield, Michigan

"I finished your book
last night! I could
hardly sleep after
reading your account of
the 214" buck and the
tragedy you suffered
with it! If you
ever think you have a
tarnished career because
of the whole legal
system, don't think
twice about it. I am
very excited that
someone actually knows
what it takes to
continually harvest big
bucks under "real world"
conditions. Thanks for
writing this book. I
read everything in print
that has your name
attached because I know
you hunt the same "real
world bucks" that I do.”
Matt Cheever - Flatlander Outdoors, Lexington, IL

|
“I just got your book
the other day and I
can't put it down. With
each page I am realizing
what I have been doing
incorrectly all these
years. Thanks for the
great info!! I ordered
two more books today for
my bowhunting friends
who unfortunately, have
been using the same
tactics I have been.
When I get the latest
issue of NAW I always go
to your articles first.”
William Barker - Riva, MD

"I want to mention that
I am so impressed with
your straight forward
approach to hunting
whitetail deer in the
REAL world and not a
fabricated twist of
things just to sell a
product. I am currently
on page 85 and just
appreciate this
collection of well
documented information
so much. Thanks again
for all your help and
the best of luck in your
future.”
Barry Ebersole - Walnut, IL

“ … just wanted to drop
you a line, to let you
know how much I enjoyed
your book. I was amazed
at so many things that I
had overlooked in my
hunting. I can't wait
until next year to
implement some changes.
I guess I was to
bull-headed to even
think that I needed to
hunt mature deer
differently than
immature deer. Now I
know I was hunting the
wrong spots. I am going
to approach my
bowhunting with a brand
new perspective. Thank
you for taking the time
to write such a book.”
Rex Featherlin

"Don Higgins has not
only mastered the art of
trophy whitetail
hunting, but he has also
mastered the art of
communicating his proven
tactics. In this book
Don generously shares
his secrets that will
make any whitetail
enthusiast a better
hunter. This is a must
read book for all
whitetail hunters.”
Scott Whitlock - Elimitrax Founder

|
"Thank you for such an
impressive book. All I
can say is WOW! As I
started reading, I
thought man a lot of
this stuff is hitting
home. The magazine
articles can get
confusing, with one guy
saying one thing while
another says something
different. You explained
a lot of things like the
second rut in a way that
made so much sense.”
Scott Shane
|
|
“I have read every
magazine article that
you have written. When I
found out that you had a
new book out, I had to
have one. Your ideas and
tactics will help me
take my hunting success
to the next level.”
Scott Lemcke - Hilton, NY
|
|
"Wow! I was very
impressed with your
book. I agree with all
of your blunt comments.
I just wanted to thank
you for the time and
effort to collect your
thoughts and write the
book.”
